Put simply the Lexus LBX is like a luxury version of the European Toyota Yaris Cross that’s been launched in Southeast Asia for the first time. Just introduced in Thailand, the local-spec LBX arrives in two trim levels, “Luxury” and “Premium.” And we can expect the sleek SUV in Malaysia soon.
Costing THB2,229,000 (about RM289,265) for the LBX Luxury, and THB2,390,000 (about RM310,158) for the LBX Premium straight out of the factory, the LBX Luxury is actually being offered for a slight discount at THB2,190,000 (approximately RM284,204) as part of a special offer during the Bangkok Motor Show.
The LBX is a compact luxury SUV that was first unveiled to the public in June 2023. Unlike other Lexus models, which have two letters in their name, this one boasts a fresh three letter configuration. It shares the same GA-B platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross, which is built for Europe.
The Lexus measures 4,190 mm in length, 1,560 mm in height, 1,825 mm in width, and has a 2,580 mm wheelbase, with 17- or 18-inch wheels and LED headlamps and daytime running lights. It also comes in nine different colour variations, including Sonic Copper and Passionate Yellow.
The hybrid drivetrain of the LBX employs an AC synchronous motor generating 80 hp and 141 Nm, and a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 91 hp and 120 Nm. This hybrid system is coupled with an E-CVT and has a maximum power output of 134 horsepower.
Both Thai-spec LBX models come equipped with a 9.8-inch head unit that can be used with wireless Apple CarPlay. A powered tailgate, a wireless phone charger and a 6-speaker sound system are also included with both versions. In addition you’ll find a 7-inch digital instrument cluster in the Luxury variation, while a 12.3-inch version is sits proudly on the dash of the Premium option. Sporty paddle shifters fitted behind the steering wheel are another addition to the Premium model.
The LBX has several modern safety technologies, such as rear cross-traffic alert, lane tracing assistance, adaptive cruise control, and a pre-collision safety system. It also has a hill-start assist control and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Will Malaysia soon get the LBX, given that it’s currently available in Thailand? We think so.
