New Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC Debuts In Malaysia

Several months ago, Mercedes-Benz GLA launched its facelifted GLA200 into  Malaysian showrooms. Now, a new model has just been added to the brand’s lineup — the GLA250 4MATIC facelift. For those hankering after this 4WD version, the SUV is locally (CKD) assembled at the brand’s plant in Pekan, Pahang, and is priced at RM295,888.

The new model comes with the more aggressive AMG Line kit employing Mercedes‘ recognisable diamond-patterned radiator grille, complete with chrome pins, and a redesigned front apron. The standard equipment also includes the 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Similar to the GLA200, the redesigned GLA250 in Malaysia is now available with a new metallic exterior colour option called Spectral Blue as well as new reflector LED High-Performance headlights that replaces the LED projector units on the predecessor while new LED taillights with updated graphics are also fitted.

A 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an integrated starter generator and 48V mild hybrid assistance powers the updated GLA250 4MATIC. Channelled through an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DCT) gearbox, the engine produces a total of 224 hp and 350 Nm, enabling the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds before hitting a top Speed of 240 km/h.

The torque-on-demand technology in 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive (AWD) enables surplus torque to be sent to the rear axle as needed. According to Mercedes-Benz, this will increase straight-line stability and driving performance.

Moving inside the Malaysian-spec GLA250, you still get the twin 10.25-inch display setup which acts as the digital instrument cluster and the touchscreen infotainment head unit respectively. These displays now run on the latest MBUX infotainment system (NTG7) and can support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The central touchpad is now gone, replaced by a shallow storage compartment. A little tricky at first, perhaps, but users will have to rely on the touchscreen to navigate the infotainment head unit. From a driver’s point of view, one feature that cannot be ignored is Mercedes-Benz’s latest generation multifunction sports steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

This GLA250 4MATIC version is a welcome addition to the G-Class lineup in Malaysia and will appeal to buyers looking for something a little upmarket and with 4WD. While drivers can look forward to the highly praised 2.0-litre turbo, the front and rear-end aesthetic upgrades will also appeal to those looking for something a little different.
