Rivian R1S, R1T Get Massive Upgrades in Second Generation Overhaul

Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has just introduced the highly anticipated second generation of its flagship R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck models. These new EVs boast numerous upgrades and enhancements over the first generation, delivering superior performance, advanced technology, and evolved designs.

Major Performance Improvements

The second-gen Rivian R1 platform offers a significant power boost, with the option of a Rivian-designed and built Quad-Motor configuration that produces an astonishing 1,025 horsepower. This allows the R1T to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, while generating a massive 1,198 lb-ft of torque when using Launch Mode. A Tri-Motor and Dual-Motor option are also available.

Increased Range and Efficiency

Rivian has redesigned the battery packs, introducing new Large and Max packs with more efficient packaging for improved range up to an estimated 420 miles on a single charge. A cost-effective Standard lithium iron phosphate battery pack option offers up to 270 miles of EPA-estimated range. Aerodynamic improvements, including new 22-inch aero wheels and a low 0.297 drag coefficient, further optimize range and efficiency.

Advanced Autonomy and Technology

The second-generation R1 vehicles feature a brand-new electrical architecture, compute platform, and in-house developed Rivian Autonomy Platform. This system boasts 11 cameras, five radars, and AI prediction technology, offering a significant leap in autonomous capabilities. It includes features like high-resolution camera Blind Spot Monitoring, Highway Assist, and Lane Change on Command (with Enhanced Highway Assist coming later this year).

New Designs and User Experiences

While maintaining Rivian’s iconic exterior styling, the new R1S and R1T introduce fresh design elements, trim options (including premium Ascend trims), and a new Storm Blue exterior paint color. The interior receives upgrades like a Dynamic Glass Roof, customizable interior lighting, and a redesigned software user interface powered by Unreal Engine.

Rivian has also introduced new user experience features, such as the ability to use car keys in Apple Wallet or select Google Pixel devices, a Rivian Premium Audio system with Dolby Atmos, and the Connect+ subscription service for streaming video and accessing over 3,000 apps on the center display.

Sustainability and Pricing

Aligned with Rivian’s commitment to sustainability, the second-generation R1 vehicles achieve a 15% lower standard lifetime carbon footprint compared to the first generation, thanks to manufacturing efficiencies and supply chain improvements.

Pricing for the second-generation Rivian R1S starts at $75,900, while the R1T pickup starts at $69,900. Production is based in Normal, Illinois, with deliveries available immediately.
