New Lexus LM Debuts In Malaysia From RM1.23M

Lexus has a new flagship minivan. The original Lexus MPV vehicle was the first-generation LM and it had only been available in China and several East Asian countries, such as Malaysia, where there has been a significant market for upscale MPVs. Lexus made the decision to promote the LM as a more internationally focused model after it garnered favourable feedback and attention in other countries. This second generation Lexus LM is now available in Malaysia in two variants—the 4-seater LM500h and the 7-seater LM350h, both of which start at RM1,228,000.

The exterior dimensions of the second-generation Lexus LM are greater than those of its predecessor, with an increase of 45 mm in height, 40 mm in width, and 85 mm in length. The minivan sits on the GA-K platform developed by Lexus which promises a lower centre of gravity, more chassis rigidity, and less weight, which in turn improves the car’s stability and handling.

With its exterior design idea based on Lexus’s Dignified Elegancy, the second-generation Lexus LM has a more opulent appearance than its predecessor. The brand’s high-performance three-projector LED headlights, LED turn signal lights, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs), which when combined produce an outward-facing bi-functional L-signature, are standard equipment on the luxury MPV in Malaysia.

The LM also proudly sports the most recent Spindle grille design from the Japanese automaker, which is reminiscent of the grilles on the brand’s more recent RX and LBX vehicles. The grille has evolved into more of what Lexus refers to as a “spindle body” and is now frameless.

LED taillights wrap over the entire width of the vehicle and are located on the back. The classic Lexus L-emblem has been replaced by the “LEXUS” script, which is situated above the taillights.

Customers in Malaysia can select from four different exterior colour options comprising Sonic Titanium, Sonic Agate, Sonic Quartz, and Graphite Black GF.

Although it has separate engines and electric motor configurations, Lexus’ hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain propels both of the LM’s Malaysian iterations. A front-mounted single electric motor and a 2.5-litre normally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine make up the LM350h’s hybrid system.

LM boasts two gutsy powetrains

The electric motor produces 182 horsepower and 270 Nm, compared to the engine’s 190 horsepower and 239 Nm. The combined system output, when paired with an e-CVT transmission, is rated at 250 horsepower, all of which is sent to the front wheels.

A dual-motor configuration, one for each axle, and a 2.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder Dual VVT-i petrol engine power the hybrid system of the Malaysian-spec LM500h. The engine produces 275hp and 460 Nm while the rear electric motor generates 103 horsepower and 169 Nm, as the front electric motor pumps out 87 horsepower and 292 Nm.

Lexus’ DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system sends power to all four wheels when paired with a 6-speed Direct Shift automatic gearbox allowing the system to produce 371 horsepower overall.

Regarding suspension, Lexus installed its first Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) on the second-generation LM. In conjunction with the dampers’ frequency-sensitive valves, the AVS is supposed to offer shock isolation and guarantee a smooth ride even on crooked or uneven roads.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

Lexus (and Toyota of course) do these luxury MPVs extremely well. In fact, when you consider bang for buck, they are the best in the world. Lexus has their LM while Toyota has the popular Alphard and Vellfire minivans. The LM may be a little pricey but it certainly delivers in the luxury aspect and ride comfort and NVH standards.
