20% Of Cars Sold In 2024 By BMW Malaysia Are EVs

At the end of Q3 2024, one in five of BMW Group Malaysia’s new cars are electric vehicles (EVs), marking a major milestone in the company’s electrification journey.

According to information disclosed during an update roundtable, the company had sold 8,600 BMW and MINI vehicles in Malaysia by Q3 with some 1,600 of those, or 19% EVs. This statistic shows how EVs are becoming more popular in the nation and highlights BMW‘s dominant position in the high-end EV market.

This achievement is consistent with the BMW Group’s global expansion in the electric vehicle market. Despite a difficult market climate, the firm recorded a 19.1% increase in sales of fully-electric cars (BEVs) between January and September 2024, delivering over 300,000 units globally.

The company’s focus on “Technology Openness” is a major contributor to this development, according to BMW Group Malaysia. This strategy places a high priority on providing a wide variety of drivetrain choices, such as electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and internal combustion engines, allowing consumers to select the technology that best fits their requirements and way of life.

In Malaysia, the German automaker offers a wide range of EVs under its two brands. These include the all-electric MINI Cooper, Countryman, and Aceman models, as well as BMW’s i5, i4, i7, iX2, and iX.

Over 2,020 charging stations have been added to the BMW Group’s network to help EV adoption in Malaysia. Owners of BMW and MINI EVs can use these charging stations via a variety of charging systems, which are run by BMW’s key partners.

Additionally, there are more than 100 BMW i and MINI charging stations at its partner locations and authorised dealerships nationwide, and more will be added as part of the strategic infrastructure expansion plan.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

I’m not surprised that BMW has reached 20% EV sales, especially given that fact that it has one of the best EV lineups on the market. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI) objective of having 10,000 EV chargers by the end of 2025 would be aided by this project. As of today, 3,354 public charging bays (at 1,113 locations) are operational throughout Malaysia, according to PLAN Malaysia’s MEVNet dashboard, the government’s public portal for EV charger availability. Among those, 956 are DC fast chargers and 2,398 are AC chargers.
