Tesla’s Red Hot Model Y Leaves Malaysian Customers Waiting Until 2024

Tesla’s rampant growth and strong demand have led to an inventory shortage in Malaysia for all three versions of its popular Model Y electric crossover. As seen on Tesla Malaysia website, new orders for the rear-wheel drive, long range, and performance models of the Model Y are now expected to be delivered in early 2024.

The inventory shortage stems from surging demand in China and across Asia and Europe, which are served by Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. The factory has expanded production lines over the past year to keep pace with accelerating electric vehicle adoption globally.

Malaysia is one of Tesla’s newest markets, having just begun Model 3 and Model Y deliveries earlier this year. However, the automaker quickly sold out of inventory on-hand as orders outpaced supply. Customers placing orders now are being told new production allocation is needed, pushing delivery timelines out to early 2024.

The depleted inventory, while frustrating for anxious customers awaiting their vehicles, is actually a very positive sign for Tesla’s future. It demonstrates considerable unmet demand in a rapidly growing EV market like Malaysia. As Tesla continues expanding production, it will be well-positioned to capitalize on this demand over the coming years.
