BYD Seal To Get Roof-Mounted LiDAR Sensor Update

According to CarNewsChina, BYD plans to release an upgraded Seal EV on August 8 boasting a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor installed on the roof but still maintaining the model’s sleek, well-proportioned design that has made it so popular. As far as the LidAR is concerned, Robosense’s cutting-edge technology will elevate the Seal’s driver assistance capabilities and put it at the forefront of autonomous driving technology.

The new Seal will however employ subtle design tweaks including redesigned rims, a revamped trunk emblem with the BYD logo, and a new exterior colour choice— sky purple. The front fascia features a sloping bonnet, a unique air inlet, and narrow headlamps that create a streamlined silhouette. Traditional door mirrors and pop-out handles feature on the sides of the car, while the distinctive single taillight remains as is. Overall, the updated Seal maintains its modern and aerodynamic aesthetic.

CarNewsChina reports that the Seal has the same powertrain specifications as before, with the rear-mounted electric motor fitted base model producing 228 horsepower, while the more powerful variant offers 308 horsepower. To improve performance, the top-of-the-line Seal has an all-wheel drive system that produces a combined output of 523 horsepower.

There are two battery options available including 61.44 kWh and 80.64 kWh, which, according to China’s CLTC standard, provide estimated ranges of up to 510 km and 650 km, respectively. Of course in the real world, these ranges are at least 15% lower than what CLTC says.

The interior is expected to include updates to the dashboard, centre console, and air vents. Other features include a new sportier steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, a wireless phone charging pad, hidden air vents, and an integrated centre console.

The updated Seal’s measurements remain at 4,800 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, 1,460 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm. The Seal is constructed using BYD’s cutting-edge e-Platform 3.0 design, which supports a brand-new, high-voltage 800 V architecture for quicker power delivery and charging. A 12-in-1 electric drive system is also incorporated into the platform for maximum performance and efficiency.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

BYD’s Seal is the first EV to really challenge Tesla’s Model 3 in terms of looks, performance, handling, range and charging infrastructure. And of course, price although we are not quite sure just yet what that will be—although current prices are competitive.
