Mercedes G 580: Off-Road Icon Reinvented as Capable EV

In a groundbreaking move that blends tradition with cutting-edge technology, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new G 580 with EQ Technology – the first fully electric variant of its legendary off-road icon, the G-Class. This highly anticipated vehicle represents a unique fusion of the G-Class’s iconic design and unparalleled off-road capabilities with the brand’s innovative electric mobility solutions.

Instantly recognizable with its distinctive angular silhouette and signature design elements, the electric G-Class maintains the model series’ unmistakable DNA while introducing exclusive features tailored for electric driving. A slightly raised hood, flared rear wheel arches with “air curtains,” new A-pillar cladding, and a spoiler lip on the roof edge contribute to optimized aerodynamics and improved interior acoustics.

Under the hood (or rather, beneath the rugged ladder frame), lies an innovative drive concept that sets new standards for off-road capability. Four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels deliver a combined output of 579 horsepower and an astonishing 859 lb-ft of torque, enabling the G 580 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.6 seconds.

But it’s not just about raw power; the electric G-Class introduces exclusive off-road functions that elevate its capabilities to new heights. The G-TURN function allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces, while G-STEERING significantly reduces the turning circle when navigating tight off-road spaces. Additionally, the intelligent off-road crawl function maintains optimum propulsion on challenging terrain, allowing drivers to focus on navigating obstacles without worrying about throttle and brake inputs.

Complementing these advanced features is the G-ROAR sound experience, which brings a unique, emotionally charged acoustic accompaniment to the electric G-Class’s acceleration, complete with an “aura” sound and various “event” sounds inspired by the model family’s combustion engine sounds.

Inside, the G 580 with EQ Technology continues the G-Class’s legacy of combining impressive quality with classic design. Round climate control vents, a grab handle for the front passenger, and the latest MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch driver display and 12.3-inch multimedia display create a truly premium experience.

For the 2025 model year, the electric G-Class will be exclusively available in the U.S. in the EDITION ONE special edition, which boasts expanded standard equipment, unique design elements, and nearly limitless personalization options through the expanded MANUFAKTUR range.

With its uncompromising off-road capability and innovative electric drive, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology redefines what’s possible in the world of electric mobility, proving that even icons can embrace the future while staying true to their roots.

Carlist Thoughts

Mercedes just dropped the mic with their all-new electric G 580 – a stunningly brilliant fusion of the iconic G-Wagon’s timeless, beast-ly design and cutting-edge electric power. While pricing hasn’t been announced yet, you can bet your bottom dollar this electric off-road monster will command a supremely premium sticker, likely over $150K. However, it’s a genius move by Mercedes to keep the legendary G’s classic rugged looks fully intact as they bring it thundering into the electric age – the brand knows its elite customer base wants that uncompromised G-Wagon presence.
