Myth Busted: EVs Charge Up Just Fine at -31°F, Canadian Driver Shows

New testing by Tesla Camping Canada reveals that modern electric vehicles can charge rapidly even in extreme subzero temperatures as low as -31°F (-35°C). The tests were conducted on a 2022 Tesla Model Y in Alberta, Canada using Tesla Superchargers and other CCS fast charging networks.

The results dispel a common myth that electric vehicles cannot charge properly or become stranded in very cold winter climates. With proper preparation like battery preconditioning and checking Supercharger status beforehand, EVs can handle cold weather charging just fine.

Recently, stories emerged about Teslas unable to charge in Chicago’s winter cold. However, issues can often be prevented by warming the battery beforehand and confirming the supercharger is operational – similar to how gas cars require more attention in freezing temperatures.

As electric vehicles continue to expand globally, winter capability remains a top priority. This real-world testing proves that modern EVs have what it takes to charge rapidly despite frigid temperatures below -30°F. Drivers in cold climates can feel confident going electric.
