Chery’s Electric Omoda 5 Is Open For Bookings In Malaysia

China’s fully electric Chery Omoda E5 might have been previewed in Malaysia last month, but now the brand has just opened the car’s so-called ‘registration of interest’ or ROI.

Customers who are interested in this EV can register their interest by submitting their name, favourite dealer, email address, and contact number on Chery Malaysia’s official website.

In essence, the Omoda E5 is the electric equivalent of the petrol-propelled Omoda 5‘s, which is presently on sale in Malaysia. The Omoda E5 has a front-mounted charging port and a revised front fascia without a central intake grille—for obvious reasons.

A new set of 18-inch aerodynamically designed wheels and automated cooling shutters up front are also added on the outside of the Omoda E5.

Some 204 hp from a single motor are channelled to the front wheels with the Omoda E5 able to cover 430 km (WLTP) on a single charge (more like 390 in the real world!) thanks to a 61 kWh blade lithium-ion phosphate battery pack.

The Omoda E5 may be charged via AC power at a maximum rate of 9.9 kW when its battery runs low. The EV can be charged from 30% to 80% in less than 30 minutes with DC fast charging, which it is compatible with a 80 kW charger.

On the inside, the Omoda E5 employs two floating 10.25-inch screens, one acts as the instrument display while the other is the infotainment head unit. The car’s dashboard has also been revised, with its touch-sensitive climate control setup being replaced by a touchscreen console.

In the safety department, the Omoda E5 comes with the “ADAS 2.5” advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) which is more advanced than the one fitted to standard Omoda 5, with the addition of a driver monitoring system.

OUR THOUGHTS

If the price is right, and we think it will be very competitive, then this good-looking EV should start selling like hotcakes. In terms of size and its seating arrangement, the E5 is also perfect for Malaysian roads and small families. Prices and range for the Omoda EV have yet to be announced for Malaysia but we should know more about costs closer to the March 2024 official launch.
