Porsche Taycan EV Impressive Real World Range Test

Porsche recently completed an initial real-world range test of pre-production versions of the updated Taycan electric sports car on public roads in California. The test drive from Los Angeles to San Diego showed the new Taycan variants can travel up to 587 km on a single charge under normal driving conditions.

The efficiently designed Taycan models covered the route along Interstates 405 and 5 at the maximum allowed speed of 75 mph (around 120 km/h). All test vehicles were equipped with the larger Performance Battery Plus option.

“The range test in Southern California impressively demonstrated how efficient the reworked Taycan is. We are continuing to focus on our ‘fast travel’ strategy for electric mobility: short charging stops paired with high real-world ranges thanks to efficient drives,” said Kevin Giek, Vice President for the Taycan model line.

The Taycan also demonstrated fast charging capabilities during the test, adding over 300 kW at an Electrify America charging station. This enabled charging the battery from 10% to 80% multiple times in under 20 minutes. Porsche says charging performance, time and start times have all been improved with the updated Taycan variants.

Extensively updated versions of the Taycan will be unveiled later this month. The new models promise more range between charges plus shorter, more durable fast charging.

Porsche has built close to 150,000 Taycans since starting production. The United States, United Kingdom, Germany and China rank among the top markets for the company’s first all-electric sports car.

The focus on efficiency pays dividends for Porsche customers seeking real-world range in an exciting electric package. The Taycan aims at the intersection of sustainability and soul with Stuttgart precision.

Porsche has made a habit of under-promising and over-delivering when it comes to their vehicles’ EPA estimated driving range. The German automaker tends to provide conservative range estimates, which their cars then reliably exceed in real-world conditions. This strategy has earned Porsche credibility and praise as other EV makers struggle to match their vehicles’ lab ratings on public roads.
