BYD Seal Is Hit In Malaysia With Record Bookings

BYD Seal sales are on fire. Sime Darby Motors (SDM) and BYD Malaysia saw an unheard-of spike in interest after the Seal was unveiled at The Exchange TRX. In just four days after the vehicle’s launch, over 1,300 bookings were made for the new EV.

Due to the extraordinary demand, SDM has chosen to keep the early bird promotion running through March 3, 2024.

Subject to specific terms and circumstances, prospective buyers who reserve the Seal by this date through the official website or at any of the nationwide dealerships will receive a complimentary home charger and RM800 in Gentari or ChargEV charging credits.

SDM’s Managing Director for Southeast Asia, Jeffrey Gan, expressed thanks for the Malaysian market’s response to the Seal. He emphasised the car’s build quality, efficiency, and affordability, pointing out that SDM’s decision to prolong the booking campaign is evidence of its dedication to supporting the development of EVs in Malaysia.

The RWD Premium and Performance AWD are the two Seal variants that are currently on sale, starting at RM179,800 and RM199,800, respectively.

With a single rear-wheel drive electric motor producing 312 ps and 360 Nm of torque, the entry-level model can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. An 82 kWh BYD Blade battery pack, with a 650 km range (on the WLTP cycle), feeds the motor. Think more like 580 kms range in the real world.

With a dual-drive electric motor producing 530 ps and 670 Nm of torque, the Performance AWD variant of the EV can jump to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. An 82 kWh Blade Battery pack, with a 580 km range (on WLTP cycle), feeds the motor.

Both devices provide up to 150kW of charging power and require just 37 minutes to fully charge a battery from 10% to 80%. But when it comes to AC charging, the EVs have a 7 kW AC Type 2 charger built in, which means it will take a lot longer—about 15.2 hours—to fully charge.

The Seal, outfitted with BYD’s e-platform 3.0, provides a fusion of intelligent technology, effectiveness, and security. With so many features, this EV is made to withstand long trips without the need for frequent stops to recharge.

To complement the launch, SDM has introduced an extensive aftersales package, including a 6-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an 8-year or 160,000km battery warranty, and an 8-year or 150,000km drive unit warranty.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

We are not surprised to learn that the Seal has hit a nerve in the marketplace, elevating it to top-selling proportions. This BYD EV is without doubt one of the best-looking, best-performing EVs in the segment and boasts a high-quality interior, decent range, and a competitive price. Watch out Tesla.
