New Mercedes-AMG G63 Blasts Into Malaysian Showrooms With V8

To clear up any confusion, this is not the fully electric G-Wagen. What we have here is the new Mercedes-AMG G63 powered by a V8, and yes, it has just debuted in Malaysia. The German automaker believes that enough has changed in this hardcore SUV to warrant a new model code, which is now W465.

Firstly, what’s new is its price which has increased by a substantial RM150k over the previous model, to RM1,948,888. And just because it’s nearly 8% more expensive,  don’t expect anything adventurous with the styling. This model needs to maintain its look, staunchly—because that’s one main reason why it sells so well.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 still has the classic G-Class appearance of all the G-wagens before it. The smoothed-out A-pillars, a small lip spoiler on the roof’s leading edge, and the recently remodelled bumpers with bigger air intakes up front are some of the modifications that distinguish it from the previous G63.

The styling tweaks, according to Mercedes-Benz, are aerodynamic adjustments that the company learnt when creating the electric G580e. These combine with newly installed soundproofing in the bodywork to enhance the cabin’s “acoustic comfort.”

Otherwise, though, the rest of the new G63 is pretty much identical to the outgoing model, and you can expect standard equipment including Multibeam LED headlights, AMG night package with darkened lights and Manufaktur Logo, 22-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels with spare wheel on rear door, red brake calipers, AMG-specific “Panamericana” grille in dark chrome, and side running boards. And those door handles have hardly changed either.

G-Wagen retails V8 but now gets 48V mild hybrid system

The interior is almost identical to the predecessor, with the only update being the twin 12.3-inch panels on the dashboard, which are now running an upgraded version of the MBUX software. Unfortunately, the IWC timepiece has been replaced with a digital “watch” that is located on the centre screen if you prefer physical clocks.

The touchpad controller in the centre console is still present in the new G-Wagen, unlike most current Mercedes-Benz cars. However, the wireless phone charging pad is new, and beneath the same moving shutter are two “climate-controlled cupholders.”

Under the bonnet is the biggest revision. Yes, it still retains the same 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine producing 585 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. But now, it’s augmented by a 48V mild hybrid system, with an belt-driven starter generator (BSG) motor housed within the updated nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT gearbox delivering an extra boost of 20 hp under acceleration.

With the new added firepower, Mercedes says the new G63 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h some 0.1 seconds quicker than before, taking just 4.3 seconds with the AMG Performance Package that comes as standard in Malaysia.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

This is a vehicle that enthusiasts never want to see change. Yeah you can tweak it a little, here and there, but for this SUV to keep selling, it must basically remain as it is outside and inside. And while MB will be offering a fully electric version soon, I get the feeling that buyers of the G-Wagen will want to see it stay as a V8 for many years to come.
