Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Smashes Nurburgring EV Lap Record

Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit has a new fully electric hero. China’s Xiaomi has just set a blistering lap time for EVs to eclipse the Rimac Nevera, making the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra the fastest EV around the 20km track.

Posting a time of 7:04.957, the SU7 Ultra was around 0.3 seconds quicker than the Rimac with the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT some 2.5 seconds slower again.

With a lightning-fast 0-100 km/h time of just 1.98 seconds from its tri-motor 1,548 horsepower powertrain, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra pushed the speeds exceeding 345 km/h on the Nordschleife as it broke the lap record to redefine electric hypercar performance.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife possesses the gold standard for lap times, and now the SU7 is the one to beat. The Xiaomi SU7 is now officially the quickest four-door production car around the Nurburgring after completing its full lap around the so-called ‘Green Hell.’

We say “officially” since Xiaomi tried to capture the same record before with a prototype SU7 Ultra, which lapped the ‘Ring around eighteen seconds faster at 6:46.874. That previous lap, however, was classified as a prototype or pre-production car and was therefore not eligible to receive such accolades, given that it used slick tires.

Xiaomi is also the first Chinese carmaker in Gran Turismo

Even though, 7:04.957 is still a super quick time for any vehicle circling the Nordschleife especially if it’s electric. With this record under its belt, Xiaomi has said that it is now a premium partner of the Nurburgring—which it is allowed to say—we think. The Germans seem to think so as the Grand Prix track has actually been updated with a new “Xiaomi Curve.” At the same time, Xiaomi EV joined the Industry Pool, which is the Nurburgring’s test and development drive program for recognized manufacturers.

In related developments, it was recently revealed that the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra would soon be included in the latest editions of the well-known Gran Turismo video game series’ on PlayStation devices.

With its inclusion in Gran Turismo 7, the SU7 Ultra becomes the first Chinese car and Xiaomi model to appear in the franchise. Additionally, Xiaomi and Gran Turismo publisher Polyphony Digital will collaborate to create the Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo concept car.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

Xiaomi — that’s a mighty impressive time. Congrats!! I have competed in the Nurburgring 24-hour race, so I am more than familiar with the significance of this milestone. This race track is the longest, most challenging strip of blacktop anywhere, and posting a 7.04 time is outstanding. Plus, the fact that the SU7 Ultra is the first Chinese car to appear in Gran Turismo. Milestone No 2. Congrats again. But hey guys, McLaren just called—they want their headlights back. Ha!
