Apple Car Said to Be Delayed Till 2028

Apple has reportedly pushed back the launch of its much-anticipated electric self-driving car to 2028, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The car was previously expected to debut in 2026.

Additionally, Apple’s first car will now have Level 2 autonomy instead of the previously planned Level 4 capabilities. Level 2 autonomy includes driver assistance features like lane centering and adaptive cruise control that still require the driver to remain fully engaged and ready to take over at any time.

This change in timeline and capabilities indicates Apple is adjusting its ambitious plans for the Apple Car in the face of development and regulatory hurdles. Launching a fully self-driving electric vehicle requires overcoming tremendous technical and safety validation challenges.

Renders Show Sleek, Futuristic Design for Apple Car

While Apple has remained secretive about the Apple Car’s design, automotive rental site Vanarama has created realistic 3D renders of what the exterior and interior may look like based on Apple’s patents.

The renders showcase a sleek, aerodynamic profile with a smooth, sloping roofline and large wheel arches. Full-width screens and minimalist styling define the interior. Easy access doors that fully open for the front and rear passengers point to a focus on user-centric convenience features for families.

Overall, Vanarama’s visualizations depict a uniquely modern yet surprisingly classic aesthetic that could disrupt the electric vehicle segment. But the final production design remains to be seen pending the revised 2028 release timeline.

Our Thoughts

If Bloomberg report is accurate, this updated timeline and scaled-back technology provides breathing room for current electric vehicle leader Tesla in the competitive autonomous driving space.
