As It Lands In Malaysia, New Deepal S07 Seen As Tesla Rival

In the presence of the XPeng X9 at a media preview this week, Bermaz Motor also revealed the Deepal S07 fully electric (EV) SUV. This was the brand’s first official debut in Malaysia as the newly incorporated Bermaz Changan entity was given the distributorship for the Chinese brand.

Deepal S07

Along with the smaller S05, the S07 is one of two variants that have been confirmed for Malaysia. It is defined as a large D-Segment SUV that competes with vehicles with comparable footprints, such as the Xpeng G6 and Tesla Model Y. Nevertheless, the Deepal S07 appears less bulbous and much sleeker in person due to its more angular profile.

Early last year, the Deepal S07 became available in Thailand and destined for Malaysia and beyond. A 66.8 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery with a 485 km range (NEDC) and a single rear axle motor rated for a maximum output of 258 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque is one of the two options available for the D-segment EV SUV.

Boasting a 79.97 kWh NMC battery pack, the higher-end model known as the “S07 L” increases the range to 560 km (NEDC). However, its rear motor’s outputs are surprisingly lower at 218 horsepower and 320 Nm.

Range expected to be around 475km for Malaysia

Although the S07’s specifications for Malaysia have not yet been released, we expect that they will be almost identical to the specs in Thailand and Singapore. Although the range is stated at 475 km (WLTP), there is just one version of the latter that is offered in Thailand with powertrain specs comparable to the S07 L.

The car has 20-inch wheels, frameless windows on all four doors, and sophisticated LED lighting as standard equipment. According to contemporary EV standards, the interior is somewhat simple, with the 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display serving as the focal point of the dash.

According to Deepal, the pleated leather seats provide an “extravagant yacht-like experience,” and the back passengers do at least have access to a touch-based climate control panel in the middle.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

It is definitely a sharp-looking SUV and can easily hold its own when plonked alongside a Tesla while its range is competitive too. Although the S07’s launch date in Malaysia is still uncertain, we don’t anticipate a particularly long wait. Will it follow the XPeng G6’s lead and undercut the Tesla Model Y’s price? Watch this space.
