Chery Omoda 5 Scores Highest Ever Result In ASEAN NCAP Crash Tests

Chery now has its first 5-star crash test rating. Chery Malaysia made the impressive announcement last week that its Omoda 5 had received a perfect 5-star rating in the latest ASEAN NCAP crash tests. The firm revealed today at a press conference that the Omoda 5’s rating of 88.64 points is the highest score in the history of the ASEAN NCAP tests.

For the record, the score is divided into four categories. The Omoda 5 scored 17.36/20.00 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP), 19.51/20.00 points for Safety Assist (SA), 15.00/20.00 points for Motorcyclist Safety (MS), and 36.77/40.00 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), as giving it a total of 88.64.

“Achieving the ASEAN NCAP safety rating is a testament to our continuous commitment to safety, innovation, and most of all to our customers. This rating is not just a badge of honour; it is a promise to our customers that our OMODA 5 cars are built with your safety in mind as our highest priority,” said Chery Malaysia Vice President Michael Chew.

[The] Omoda 5’s high scores across the four categories demonstrate our comprehensive approach to safety and our dedication to continuous improvement,” Chew continued. The Chery Omoda 5 now has five stars in both ANCAP and EURO NCAP, two international safety ratings that were attained in 2022, in addition to the new ASEAN NCAP grade.

Launched in Malaysia last year, the tiny crossover has been involved in a number of high-profile online disputes recently, one of which led to a recall due to a welding device that was incorrectly calibrated during manufacture.

A representative for Chery Malaysia claims that the recall operation has already finished, including all inspections and part replacements.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

It goes without saying that the Omoda 5’s new high score will only add to the appeal of the Omoda 5 in and around South-East Asia. Recalls aside, this Chery SUV is one of the best-looking vehicles in its segment and in addition to its safety level, delivers handling and ride traits that are competitive with rivals from Japan and Europe, while its competitive price factor makes it difficult to ignore.
