There’s a new kid on the block and on the Malaysian car market—and it’s called iCaur. Formerly known as iCar, the new Chery sub-brand iCAUR may be a little confusing given the the name was changed for international markets.
The company’s own Facebook post, which teased a silhouette of an SUV, which we assume is the fully electric iCar 03.
As has been reported in past reports, iCaur is preparing to introduce three models—including fully electric (EV) and range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) models—in Malaysia and other regional countries this year.
First shown at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 as the Jaecoo J6, the iCar 03 appears to be taking some substantial styling elements from the Britain’s Land Rover Defender, suggesting that the design team may have been studying the model.
Rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are the powertrain options available for the iCar 3 that produce 181 hp from a 65.69 kWh lithium ion battery pack boasting a 371 km (WLTP) range in the RWD version.
Packing a larger 69.77 kWh battery along with an additional electric motor on the front axle, the AWD variant increasing the system’s output to 275 horsepower and 385 Nm. The AWD iCar 03’s higher output results in a somewhat shorter range of 364 km (WLTP) even with a larger battery.
In addition to supporting vehicle-to-load (V2L) at 3.3 kW, both versions offer AC charging at 6.6 kW and DC charging at 80 kW. All indications suggest that the iCar 03 will make its official Malaysian premiere at the upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2025, so keep checking out for our coverage!
CARLIST THOUGHTS
As long as the exterior looks sharp and well-proportioned like the J6, even if it does borrow design hints unashamedly from Land Rover, customers will overlook that fact and concentrate on price, powertrain and features.
