Isuzu Reveals New D-Max EV in Bangkok With Malaysia In Its Sights

An EV from Isuzu? At last. The Japanese brand has just unveiled the D-Max EV concept, a new pickup truck that showcases the company’s entry into the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. At the recent Bangkok International Motor Show, few details were available.

The D-Max EV, which was “developed to meet a broad range of commercial and passenger vehicle needs while retaining the tough underlying performance expected of pickup trucks,” is a novel way for the Japanese company to achieve success.

For its part, Isuzu is referring to this electric D-Max as a concept solely since it has been rumoured that the production version of the BEV pickup will first be introduced in a few European markets in 2025, starting with Norway.

Future rollout plans include markets like the UK, Australia, Thailand, and eventually Malaysia, depending on market demand and the development of EV charging infrastructure.

The D-Max EV differentiates itself from its diesel predecessor in terms of design with several distinctive styling elements. The front grille features a closed-off section while the front apron employs blacked-out portions that contrast with the grille’s design. Notably, the headlamps and grille insert have blue highlights that give the car a stylish touch and are a nod to its green credentials.

The integration of Elf EV-derived parts, such as the battery pack and management system mounted in the middle of the ladder-frame chassis, underpins the D-Max BEV’s performance. The D-Max EV idea has two electric motors on each axle and a 66.9 kWh battery capacity. Its combined system output is 325 Nm and 177 PS. That being considered, its stated range on a single charge still raises serious concerns.

The D-Max EV’s incorporates components borrowed from the Elf EV, including the battery pack and management system which are integrated into the midsection of titshe ladder-frame chassis. Utilizing a 66.9 kWh battery pack with dual electric motors on each axle, the D-Max EV concept delivers a combined system output of 177 ps and 325 Nm. While Isuzu are remaining silent on range we expect it to clear 300kms on a single charge.

In addition, the D-Max EV has full-time four-wheel-drive capability and can reach a maximum speed of more than 130 km/h. There is an additional 3.5 tonnes of towing capability available, and it can tow up to 1,000 kg. Isuzu’s focus on practicality and power highlights the D-Max BEV’s adaptability to a wide range of applications.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

With its tough, well-proportioned styling, and gutsy powertrain, the new D-Max is without doubt one of the stars in the pickup category. And as it is due to add a fully electric spec to the lineup shortly, Malaysian 4WD drive fans can start to lick their lips in anticipation of a segment leader. Keep tuned for updates on the pickup’s launch schedule. Even with a slightly limited range 300km range, the D-Max EV will still attract buyers.
