Fully electric models in the MG4 and MG ZS, will herald the former British firm’s — and now Chinese — return to the Malaysian market. This dynamic couple, who were given a sneak preview last month, will formally arrive on our shores on March 27.
The MG4 and MG ZS EVs will be introduced on March 27 at 10:30 AM on MG Motor Malaysia’s Facebook page, according to the official social media handle of the brand, SAIC Motor Malaysia, the official custodian of the brand.
MG has returned to Malaysia as an all-EV brand, which was a significant move by the Chinese carmaker towards environmentally friendly transportation in Malaysia.
Available from MG Motor Malaysia, the MG4 comes in four different trim levels including Standard, Lux, Lux Extended, and XPOWER. Its projected price range is from RM 104,000 to RM 159,000.
With a WLTP-claimed range of 350 km (translated to around 280km in the real world), the base-spec model is propelled by a 170 ps/250 Nm rear motor and a 51 kWh LFP battery. It can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, making it competitive with most rivals.
But the Lux version kicks things up a notch with a 203 ps/250 Nm motor and a larger 64 kWh NMC battery for customers looking for more power and drivability. With this setup, the range is increased to 435 km (real world = @ 350) while delivering a 0-100 km/h of 7.7 seconds.
In contrast, the Lux Extended Range model has a more powerful 245 ps/350 Nm motor and a battery specially designed for extended range, providing an amazing 520 km of range (let’s say 440), and a 0-100 time of 6.1 seconds
The range-topping XPOWER has a high-performance dual motor setup that produces 435 ps and 600 Nm together with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, it has a launch control system that accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, which approaches supercar territory.
The MG4 XPOWER’s improved wheels, brake discs, and calipers allow it to brake from 100 km/h to 0 km/h in just 33.9 metres, demonstrating its superior braking capability. With its 64 kWh battery, the EV can go up to 385 km on a single charge.
The MG ZS EV is available from MG Motor Malaysia in a single Luxury configuration, with an estimated retail price of RM 129,000. It is propelled by an electric motor up front that can generate 176 ps and 280 Nm of torque and takes 8 seconds to reach 100 km/h.
CARLIST THOUGHTS
This will no doubt be one of the biggest EV debuts in Malaysia with China’s MG launching two EVs at once—cars that offer stylish looks, quality interiors, competitive range and keen price tags. The MG4 is highly praised in motoring circles due to its sharp looks and spritely handling.
