Nearly One-Third Of All BMWs Sold In Malaysia Were EVs In 2023

BMW’s electric car sales are going gangbusters in Malaysia. BMW Group Malaysia delivered “over 3,600” electrified vehicles from its BMW, Mini, and BMW Motorrad brands last year, accounting for an astounding 31.4% of all deliveries made for the year out of the 15,012 vehicles it sold altogether.

The numbers also indicate an exponential 136% increase over the previous year, bringing the total number of electrified BMW vehicles on Malaysian roads to almost 30,000. The company claims this places it at the top of the market for “premium electric vehicles.” And who are we to argue…

The success of BMW Group Malaysia’s electric vehicles is evident on a global scale as well. In 2023, 15% of all BMW Group deliveries will come from these EVs.

The business did not release a breakdown of the models it sold, but it did report that over 1,100 iX units—led mostly by the iX xDrive40 variant—and over 600 i7 units were sold.

A bewildering assortment of electric and electrified vehicles, including the iX1 xDrive30, i5 eDrive40, iX xDrive50 and M60, the i7 and 7 Series, and the XM (the latter being the first electrified model from its M division) were introduced in Malaysia last year.

Beyond automobiles, the firm installed chargers at its dealerships and collaborated with Malaysia’s numerous charge point operators (CPO), providing BMW owners with access to over 1,700 charges around the country.

“The acceptance of these vehicles allowed us to achieve the title of the Number One Premium Electric Vehicles provider in Malaysia. This is an achievement that we do not take lightly as it underscores our goal to shape, lead, and future-proof the Malaysian automotive landscape in the years to come with the newest technological offerings from the BMW Group,” said Pierre Jalady, vice president of the BMW Group.

OUR THOUGHTS

Yes, Tesla boasts strong sales internationally, especially in the U.S., but in many countries, the Germans (including Mercedes and Audi), but mainly BMW appear to have the strongest market penetration with EVs. One of their strong points is that they offer a full mix of EVs, including sports cars, sedans, and SUVs.
