New Peugeot 408 GT Lands In Malaysia With Jaw-Dropping Styling

The Peugeot 408 is a good-looking piece of kinetic art—jaw-dropping actually. But it is an anomaly as it combines the best of both worlds—being part sedan and part SUV. Oh, and expect your driver’s seat to be a little higher than that of a sedan, even though it drives like one.

Jokes aside, you shouldn’t be too concerned about minor floods because the 408 is a little higher off the ground than a sedan. In fact, its inventors claim that it is the first vehicle of its kind. Peugeot says that people “looking for a silhouette that is more original and innovative than a compact SUV, which they consider too common or too family-oriented,” are the target market.

It combines the sportiness of a sedan, the practicality of an SUV, and exterior proportions that make an impression wherever it goes. It has lion-scratched taillights, a spoiler that resembles cat ears, and fangs at the end of its headlamps.

Whether you like it or not, it turns heads wherever it goes. The top-of-the-line GT model, which costs a sizable RM196,055, is packed full of all the mod cons. But it’s still crazy money for a C-segment car.

Matrix LED headlamps, 20-inch wheels, motorised seats made of Nappa leather, a cabin purifier, an improved sound system, a 3D meter display and a more comprehensive set of safety features are all included with the 408 GT. The cosy Nappa leather-wrapped front seats with massaging and lumbar functions are undoubtedly its sexiest features.

Its performance is brisk too. Although some may not think a 1.6-litre engine is adequate, its 218 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque are more than enough for all driving situations, while the slick eight-speed automatic gearbox delivers smooth, quick changes.

Additionally, the Peugeot 408 will have plenty of boot capacity— 536 to 1,611 litres. It is comparable to all other large sedans and SUVs in this price range. Levers to flatten the seats from the boot are also included in the 408 GT.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

This sleek 408 is definitely a rare breed in a world of ho-hum SUVs and boring crossovers. In fact, we compliment Peugeot for their boldness and adventurous spirit in coming up with such an exterior that challenges industry norms. And with a chic interior, 218-hp and spritely handling, we think this new model will generate extra traffic, as long as buyers can ignore that hefty price tag.
