Proton Sales Rise Sharply Clearing 50,000 Through Q2

Proton is on a roll. In April 2024, the Malaysian brand sold 11,025 vehicles in its domestic and international markets. This represents a 17.1% increase from the same month in 2023. The national automaker sold 50,175 vehicles year-to-date (YTD), which is 473 more vehicles than it sold during the same period last year.

Proton claims that a significant portion of its sales were attributable to its export sales. Which have seen a rise of 38.5% over the same period previous year.

As of today, the company has an 18.7% market share in April. Proton is expected to hold the second position in the total national vehicle sales ranking with a year-to-date market share of 19.2%.

With 23,278 units sold in 2024 thus far, the Saga continues to be the best-selling model for Proton when it comes to individual model sales figures. The S70 slots into second place with 7,463 vehicles leaving the showroom floor in the same time frame.

The X50, Persona, and X70 trail behind with sales of 7,086, 6,799, and 1,972 units, respectively. The Saga is the best-selling Proton model in the brand’s export market, with sales of 427 units so far in 2024—a 16% increase from 368 units. In its lone export market, Brunei, the S70 sold just 89 units, while the X50 sold 176 units.

“The slowdown in automotive sales in April, where TIV shrank by 16.8% compared to March 2024, can be attributed to the long holiday period as OEMs, dealerships, and other members of the local automotive ecosystem took time off to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar.

However, continuous efforts to improve quality have resulted in stronger Global Customer Product Audit scores since 2019, giving drivers more trust in the brand, which has further supported the persistent demand for Proton vehicles.

“With the Proton S70 stepping up its sales in both the domestic and export markets, we are confident of achieving sustainable exports sales growth this year and raising the contribution of export sales to our annual sales volume. We have strengthened our position in Bangladesh and expanded our export portfolio to include Trinidad and Tobago this year.”

Roslan Abdullah continued by saying, “Proton is optimistic about the market’s recovery in the short to medium term because there is still a lot of demand from automobile purchasers. As a result, we must keep doing our best and assuring excellence in every attempt done.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

We are not surprised that Proton is doing so well. With its strong new innovative lineup focusing on the Saga and S70, cars that give buyers exactly what they want in the way of design, packaging, comfort and price, we see the brand maintaining its no 2 position domestically.
