So you’ve never heard of Slate? Me neither, up until yesterday. But as soon as it emerges from behind the veil of a secret website and reveals what it’s working on, all we know is that Slate is a new start-up US company that specializes in EV technology and appears to be preparing for something significant.
Since it appears that this new automaker was only recently established, there isn’t much history to discuss because, well, it doesn’t yet have a history. We do know that Slate Auto is located in Troy, Michigan-based and is an automaker “exploring opportunities in the electric vehicle space,” according to its LinkedIn profile, which started on March 5, 2025.
According to the page, Slate has already built a staff of 200–500 workers and has 46 more positions open for employment. While many of the positions are administrative in nature, several, such as suspension engineer and plant manager, give the impression that Slate is working on EVs, or at least one EV.
But it’s still unclear if Slate intends to sell its technology to other OEMs or launch itself as a legitimate new American EV brand.
Sign up for Slate’s newsletters online and you learn that a new company in Michigan is looking to hire, or should we say ‘poach’ a team of car builders from other US automakers.
CARLIST THOUGHTS
So, what precisely is Slate, then? Regretfully, we still don’t fully know despite asking a couple of sources closer (than us) to the company. A countdown at the bottom of Slate’s website indicates that the official unveiling will take place on April 24 or such, so we will all know more in less than a month. Stay tuned.
