Tesla Opens First Supercharger Station In Penang

Penang now has its first Tesla Supercharger station after the location went online at the Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya in Penang, Malaysia.

This new station connects two Destination Charging stations in the state—one at The Ship Campus in Batu Kawan and another at All Seasons Place in Air Itam. The new station is intended to make travelling from Singapore to Penang via Johor easier for Tesla owners.

There are four (DC) charging stalls at the Sunway Carnival Supercharging Station capable of providing peak output of 250kW—one of the industry’s highest ratings. This means that Tesla owners can charge their cars for just 15 minutes and add up to 270 km of range. Penang alone currently has 12 AC destination chargers and 4 DC superchargers.

With the help of its “Plug in, charge and go” feature, Tesla also provides easy charging options. Users may quickly find, identify, and check the status of Superchargers using the Tesla App, and their payments will be handled instantly. The cost per kWh for DC supercharging is RM 1.25.

3068 Jalan Todak, Pusat Bandar Seberang Jaya, Seberang Jaya, 13700 Perai, Pulau Pinang is the address of Sunway Carnival Mall. Parking at the Supercharger station is RM 5 per hour and is available around the clock.

With continuous expansion to ease travel between Malaysia and Singapore, where there are an additional 11 Supercharging stations and 9 Destination Charging stations, Tesla currently has 8 Supercharging stations (40 DC chargers) and 10 Destination Charging stations (61 AC chargers) in Malaysia.

Carlist Thoughts

Those four new charging stations in Penang will no doubt energize Tesla ownership on the island and beyond allowing drivers to add some 270km of range in just 15 minutes. At present, that’s some of the quickest charging times in Malaysia and will help to deflect increasing interest being channelled at Chinese EV makers like BYD and GWM.
