Volkswagen’s Golf GTI/R Picks Up Motor Trend’s Car Of The Year Trophy

It’s official, folks. MotorTrend’s Car of the Year for 2026 is the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R—which were jointly named to the top award. This marks the third time in its eight-generation history that Golf models have earned this honor—first in 1985 for the Golf GTI and 30 years later for the Mk7 Golf family.

Each Car of the Year contender is judged against its competitors in the field as well as by MotorTrend’s six key criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, performance of intended function, value, safety, and efficiency. Eligible vehicles must be all-new or significantly updated. Since 1949, MotorTrend has rigorously evaluated vehicles for these awards, later adding Truck, SUV, and Performance Vehicle of the Year. The “Of The Year” awards are recognized among the most prestigious in the industry.

MotorTrend praised the Golf models for their build quality, driving dynamics, modern design, advanced technology, and value.  “Authentic and spirited, the Golf continues to inspire the same enthusiasm it has since its debut,” the editors noted. “A recent update refined this eighth generation, sharpening its capabilities while preserving the engaging character that makes it a joy to drive. The GTI and R pursue different goals, yet each fulfills its mission with precision and confidence.”

“For 50 years, the Golf lineup has been the enthusiast heartbeat of Volkswagen in America—a family of vehicles that showed that practicality and driving excitement could be mutually compatible,” said Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “This recognition from MotorTrend celebrates not just the Golf’s success, but also the community of drivers who have defined the performance Golf as the hot hatch.”

CARLIST THOUGHTS
