New Mercedes-Benz G580 Electric Debuts In Malaysia

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has unveiled the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz G580, featuring EQ Technology. If you want the G580 with EQ Technology it’ll cost you RM958,888while the G580 with EQ Technology EDITION ONE costs RM998,888.

The G580 with EQ Technology is powered by four electric motors, each of which generates 147 horsepower and has a built-in two-speed transmission. These four electric motors work together to deliver 587 horsepower and 1,164 Nm of torque—a combination that permits 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

A 116 kWh lithium-ion battery pack powers the G580, which offers a 473 km of range (WLTP). Drivers will be happy at the SUV allow a 10-80% recharge in 32 minutes thanks to DC charging at 200 kW.

To safeguard the battery pack in off-road situations, the batteries are housed in a reinforced ladder frame chassis. Meanwhile a torsion-resistant shell further shields the battery pack from dirt and water intrusion.

Although the G580’s chassis is similar to that of its gasoline-powered siblings, it has a revised rear suspension with a De Dion rigid axle in place of the double-wishbone front suspension.

Even the electric G580 has special off-road features

Even though the G580 is now an EV, it still has special off-road features that are only available in Malaysia. Among these are G-Steering, which shortens the SUV’s turning circle while the SUV can also turn up to 720 degrees on the spot under certain circumstances on loose or uneven roads thanks to the G580’s quad-motor drivetrain and G-Turn feature.

The G580 has additional off-road capabilities, such as an off-road crawl mode that can be used while the SUV is climbing or descending a slope. This feature works similarly to cruise control in off-road settings.

With a few significant exceptions, the G580 with EQ Technology’s exterior is almost identical to that of the gasoline engine-powered G-Class. These include replacing the externally mounted spare tire with a storage box at the back of the G580 and installing a new black-panel radiator grille with lighting elements surrounding it.

For safety features, the G580 with EQ Technology is equipped with a suite of ADAS features, which include parking assist with Parktronic, Active parking assist with Parktronic, blind spot assist, active steering assist, transparent bonnet, and a 360-degree camera.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

While a huge percentage of the G-Class market rallied against an electric version of this model, Mercedes went ahead and made it anyway. It remains to be seen how the market will respond to this comparatively macho-looking machine and whether an electric powertrain can cut it. Technologically, it is well-conceived, boasting 587 hp and four electric motors.
