New Jaecoo 6 Debuts In Thailand Ahead Of Malaysia Launch

Just launched in Thailand, the Jaecoo 6 is a sharp-looking fully electric SUV that is destined for Malaysian showrooms inside of this year. It comes in three different versions: Long Range 2WD Pro, Long Range 2WD, and Long Range 4WD, and according to Headlight Magazine, the Jaecoo 6 is fully imported from China and costs between THB899,000 (about RM117k) and THB1.149 million (about RM150k).

During the 2024 Malaysia Autoshow, the Defender-inspired model was even given a preview in Malaysia, having already been confirmed for the country. However, whether it will wear a Jaecoo badge is an unanswered question.

As we have reported in the past, this EV will be marketed under a different Chery sub-brand, named iCar (not affiliated with Apple), and will be known as the iCar 03 in Malaysia. Sometime this year, the iCar sub-brand is expected to debut in Malaysia, with three EV and range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) models in the works.

Depending which country your in, things can be complicated. For comparison, the Jaecoo 6 is smaller than the Tank 300, with Chinese made, with dimensions of 4,406 mm for length, 1,910 mm for width, 1,715 mm for height, and a 2,715 mm wheelbase.

The Jaecoo 6 appears to get its design inspiration from the Land Rover Defender’s distinctive boxy shape with inverted “L” shaped matrix LED headlights, a row of horizontal slats for the front grille, and an oddball lighted “i” insignia.

The Thai-spec interior has an eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, a 9.2-inch digital gauge cluster for the driver, and a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display, while the 4WD version boasts ventilated and massage-fitted front seats.

A rear-mounted electric motor with 184 horsepower and 220 Nm propels the two-wheel drive versions of the SUV, enabling it to reach a top speed of 150 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.

This powertrain gives the SUV a 371 km (WLTP) range when combined with a 65.69 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery pack. With the addition of a second electric motor on the front axle, the Long Range 4WD version boosts output to 279 horsepower and 385 Nm, allowing it to jump from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

The 4WD variant has a slightly larger 69.77 kWh LFP battery pack, although it has a slightly lower range than the 2WD variant—364 km (WLTP). Four drive modes are standard on the 2WD models: Eco, Normal, Sports, and Custom. Five more off-road-specific drive modes are available on the AWD versions: All Road, Slippery, Beach, Muddy, and Bumpy.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

The Jaecoo 6 certainly looks like it was inspired by the Defender but given a distinctly futuristic accent. In fact, the design is so futuristic that the SUV almost looks like concept car that was just allowed to morph into a production vehicle without any market-oriented modifications. Overal its price seems competitive, it boasts quality equal to its rivals and it enjoys decent range.
