All-New BYD M6 Launched In Indonesia: Headed For Malaysia

The BYD M6 made a big splash at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show recently, a car show set up for the Indonesian market (GIIAS). The M6 is available in three different seating arrangements with the ordinary seven-seater version costing 379,000,000 rupiah (about RM110k), while the Superior variant (also seven-seater) costs 419,000,000 rupiah (around RM121k). Customers must pay 429,000,000 rupiah (about RM124k) for a 6-seater with a middle-row captain seat, which is only available with the Superior model.

Although it uses the same platform as the current E6, the new model has a different look and better performance from the EV model. The exterior design of the M6 has been updated to reflect the newest BYD corporate style boasting a noticeable silver strip connecting the revised multi-projector LED headlamps that make up the new front-end design. A special wing-shaped insert in the bumper blends in perfectly with the chrome accents and the narrow air intakes.

The new model’s rear has a modified taillight assembly with a full-width light bar highlighted by a thin chrome strip; the BYD insignia has taken the place of the previous “Build Your Dreams” badge. A chrome strip has been added to the bottom bumper region, offering a sophisticated touch. Standard 17-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels are fitted to the car.

The M6 base model now has a more potent electric motor—upgraded from 94 horsepower to 161 horsepower. Additionally, the torque output has increased to 310 Nm, up from 180 Nm. With 201 horsepower, the higher-spec vehicle uses the same electric motor as the BYD Atto 3. The base and higher-spec vehicles can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 10.1 and 8.6 seconds, respectively, thanks to these powertrain improvements.

A lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery powers the M6, while an NEDC standard, the standard model’s 55.4 kWh battery pack has an estimated range of 420 km.

The interior of the updated model retains the familiar horizontal dashboard layout and analog instrument cluster, though it’s received subtle refinements such as a modernized “Build Your Dreams” logo. A new wood-effect trim adorns the dashboard, while the center console features a redesigned gear selector replacing the previous rotary knob. The most notable change is the larger, powered rotating central display, now measuring 12.8 inches compared to the previous 10.1-inch unit. Apple CarPlay connectivity remains a standard feature.

The BYD comes equipped with a range of standard features, including keyless entry, push-button start, a hands-free key card, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, synthetic leather upholstery, a vehicle-to-load charging function, a 360-degree camera system, and a six-speaker audio system. The higher-end trim level adds roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, wireless device charging, and a power-operated tailgate.

Safety-wise, the M6 comes with six airbags, stability control, and a door opening warning. However, only the Superior variant gets any form of advanced driver assistance such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, blind spot monitoring, and automatic high beam.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

The M6 enters the market as a potential arch-rival to the Porsche Macan. This move cements its position in the marketplace. as one of dominance. With the starting prices at around RM110, 000, BYD is making the biggest launch so far to date.  And it all has meaning. The Chinese are putting a lot of effort into this venture.
