Fully-Electric Volvo EX90 To Debut In Malaysia With 7-seats

According to Volvo Cars Malaysia, the brand’s new flagship, the seven-seater fully electric EX90 SUV, is finally landing in Malaysian showrooms this year.

Chris Tan, the sales director for Volvo Cars Malaysia, stated in a statement after the company’s 2024 sales success report that “we now have a focused portfolio of fully electric vehicles for Malaysia with our flagship seven-seater Volvo EX90 coming next.”

As early as December 2022, the EX90 was hinted as a definite addition to Malaysia’s lineup. However, due to production delays worldwide, the firm had to delay the launch of the “electric XC90” in Malaysia.

Apart from a statement in the press release that reads, “The upcoming Volvo EX90 is the company’s largest all-electric SUV and incorporates Volvo Cars’ most advanced safety technology to date such as lidar, core computing, and occupant monitoring for drivers and passengers,” no specifications have been disclosed yet. But of course neighbours can always be consulted starting with Thailand.

Three different Volvo EX90 models were introduced in Thailand towards the end of last year. At THB4,290,000 (approximately RM566k), the base Twin Motor Plus has a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain with 408 horsepower and 770 Nm while the Twin Motor Performance Ultra, which comes in six- and seven-seater versions and is priced at THB4,890,000 (approximately RM645k), has a more potent dual-motor setup with 517 horsepower and 910 Nm. Now that’s real power.

Performance-wise, the Performance Ultra twins’ increased power permits a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds, while the Plus variation manages 5.9 seconds. As usual, the top speed is 180 km/h, which is standard for Volvos.

All models use the same 111 kWh nickel manganese cobalt ternary battery pack, which gives the Plus and Performance Ultra models a range of up to 600 km (WLTP) and 590 km, respectively.

The premier EV SUV with seven seats can be fully charged in around ten hours thanks to an inbuilt 11 kW AC charger. In contrast, up to 250 kW of DC rapid charging is supported, which translates to a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes.

The Thailand-spec EX90 comes equipped with a 14-speaker Bose sound system, 20-inch wheels, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display connected to a nine-inch digital instrument cluster, and LED exterior lighting as standard.

A more sophisticated 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system, adjustable air suspension, pixel matrix LED headlights, massaging functionality in the front seats, and the option of six or seven seats are included the Performance Ultra models.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

Knocking horns with the likes of fellow countryman in Zeekr 009 and the soon to be launched Denza D9 and XPeng X9, the stylish EX90 with its sleek lines, classy interior, competitive range, and quick charge times will be tough to beat.
