MG Cyberster Teased On Malaysian Site Ahead Of Local Launch

Teasing a new car’s exterior, or part of it, has become part and parcel of launching new cars these days. Literally, every carmaker is doing it. This time, the Malaysian website of Chinese-state-owned British brand MG has teased the rather smart-looking MG Cyberster, which is slated for its official launch into the Malaysian market sometime in the first quarter of 2024.

Unlike other carmakers however, MG Malaysia is being a little more subtle with its pre-launch hype by forcing those interested in the Cyberster to scroll down to the bottom of the MG Malaysia website in order to get a glimpse of the new EV coupe. To be honest though, while it’s always fun for carmakers to tease new models—like MG is doing here with its new coupe—the fact remains that the Cyberster has already been revealed last year with images of the car flooding sites in Europe and China and several ASEAN nations.

The British automaker’s two-door all-electric convertible roadster is called the Cyberster. It has so far been on display in a number of ASEAN nations, such as Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.

With a dual-motor layout, the vehicle that debuted at the Thailand International Motor Expo 2023 delivers 544 hp and 725 Nm of torque to all four wheels. Fitted with a 77 kWh battery pack, the all-electric roadster boasts a range of 570 km (CLTC) between charges, although according to popular website ‘insideevs,’ America’s EPA range figures are typically around 35% lower than China’s CLTC rating, which would make the Cyberster’s real-world range around 380-400km.

The Cyberster is equipped with a set of stylish scissor doors and distinctive LED taillights. The car’s independent double-wishbone front suspension and multilink rear suspension are expected to deliver tight sporty handling and firm ride quality.

MG Malaysia teased this image at the bottom of its site.

Officially launched at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2023, MG revealed a price range of 319,900 – 359,800 yuan (or RM 214,200 to RM 241,100). The Cyberster made its public debut in Europe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will go on sale in selected global markets throughout 2024.

Though MG Malaysia’s website has hinted at an imminent Cyberster launch here, we expect to the Chinese-state-owned British brand to first introduce its more family-oriented models, such as the MG 4 and ZS EV, into Malaysia.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

This roadster should do MG proud with its startling looks and perky 544hp. In terms of performance and pricing—with prices expected somewhere around the mid-RM350,000 range, we can expect the Cyberster to enter the Malaysian market as a rival to models like the BMW Z4 and Porsche 718, but after the MG 4 and ZS EV.
