New Chery Tiggo 5X Debuts In Indonesia, Malaysia In The Pipeline

Chery has just debuted the new Tiggo 5X in Indonesia. And even though it’s the brand’s new entry-level model, the company is still offering the same 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty as it does its more expensive siblings. Oh, and we can expect to see its local namesake on sale in Malaysia too very soon.

In addition to the extensive warranty, the Tiggo 5X is also covered by a six-year vehicle warranty and four-year free service programme. And that’s not all – Chery is also offering a guaranteed buy-back at 70% of the original vehicle price, essentially ensuring the vehicle’s resale value.

So what is this car? The Tiggo 5X is essentially the local Chinese name for what we in Malaysia call the “Tiggo 4 Pro.” The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, which produces 111 horsepower and 138 Nm and mated to a CVT, will power the Classic and Champion versions of the small crossover available in Indonesia.

Targeting younger car enthusiasts, the Tiggo 5X is being introduced at a competitive price point, with the Classic model starting at IDR249 million (about RM72k) and the Champion model at IDR279 million (around RM80k). To put things in perspective, the Toyota Raize is priced from IDR235 million (about RM72k), while the Honda WR-V starts at IDR275 million (approximately RM84k).

Chery Indonesia generated further interest by announcing special discounted pricing for the first 1,000 customers. The Classic and Champion variants now cost IDR239 million (about RM69k) and IDR269 million (approximately RM77k), respectively, after a price reduction of IDR10 million. The Classic variant is the entry-level model, as one might expect given the price. It’s not flashy, boasting basic features including smaller 16-inch wheels, halogen headlights, and a simpler black interior, but it does have the same 10.25-inch touchscreen headunit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In the meantime, the Champion version comes equipped with a number of extra features such as a powered sunroof, LED lighting, 17-inch wheels, and an advanced driver assistance suite that includes automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Strangely, rather than sporting the new appearance that was unveiled with a facelift update in April of this year, the model is being offered in Indonesia in pre-facelift form.

Nearer to home, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has been officially confirmed for release in Malaysia. Expect a launch by the end of 2024, with a target price of less than RM100,000.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

As one of the more important Chinese SUVs to launch in Indonesia, and soon in Malaysia, this model is well equipped to take on the hot rivals from Japan like the WR-V and Raize. And dare we say, beat them for features and price competitiveness.
