New Defender-Like Jaecoo J6 To Finally Launch In Malaysia

The imminent local debut of the Jaecoo J6 electric SUV has been announced by Jaecoo Malaysia. The J6, an electric SUV with a rugged appearance, resembles a futuristic cross between a Suzuki Jimny and a JLR Defender.

Boasting dimensions of 4,406 mm by 1,910 mm by 1,715 mm, the Jaecoo J6 is a sizable vehicle. with wheels that extend to the very extremities of the SUV’s four corners. This is advantageous for off-roading as well because the J6 has extremely short overhangs.

Although its “fangs” aren’t quite as elegant, the J6’s headlamps appear to be inspired by Peugeot. The SUV has also succeeded in creating a family-friendly appearance, while having a sleeker “grille” than the J7.

The J6 is covered by the unpainted cladding that is typical of an off-road vehicle. Additionally, despite its already boxy shape, it features electronic pop-out door handles that are said to help the car’s aerodynamics at high speeds. The Jaecoo J6 appears to have drawn strong design hints from the JLR Defender, as evidenced by the way its wheel arches protrude.

The J6’s complete specs have not yet been released by Jaecoo. However it is expected to have the same hardware as the iCar 03. With iCar another Chery sub-brand, the “03” model is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It also features a 69.8 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 501 km (CLTC) that translates to around 400km in the real world—still respectable.

The J6’s streamlined digital instrument cluster and large horizontal head unit make it an inside representation of a modern EV. Thankfully there are still several physical knobs and switches on the central console, implying a more traditional analog interior character for the J6. As we examine the J6’s cabin, we can’t help but notice that the second row has a fully flat floor, which reminds us of the Defender.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

The J6 is a good looker even though it does borrow definite design hints from the Defender. Rivaling the best off-roaders from Japan, Europe and the U.S., the J6 employs a rugged exterior matched only by its strong powertrain and chassis. According to Jaecoo Malaysia, a right-hand drive J6 will make its premiere at the next Malaysia Autoshow, after the confirmation of the model’s arrival in Malaysia.
