New GAC Aion V Debuts In Indonesia, Destined For Malaysia

Two versions of the all-new GAC Aion V are slated to go on sale in Indonesia this year after Aion presented that car at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2025. The Aion V Exclusive and Aion V Luxury will retail for IDR449 million (about RM122k) and IDR489 million (@ RM133k), respectively, according to Aion Indonesia Chief Executive Officer Andry Ciu.

At GAC’s new production plant in Cikampek, Karawang Regency, West Java, the Aion V will be locally assembled at the factory which can produce 50,000 units a year.

GAC Motor’s EV division produces the C-segment EV SUV, the Aion V. This SUV which is billed as the brand’s “first global strategic model,” has a “tough-looking, edgy powerful” exterior design with a “refined interior style” according to the manufacturer, while we think it looks sharp and competitive. The SUV will compete in Indonesia against the BYD Atto 3, Neta X, and the Geely EX5, the Chinese cousin of the Proton eMAS 7. When it finally arrives in Malaysia by late 2025, expect it to compete with similar models.

Although a single motor on the front axle powers both the Exclusive and Luxury models of the Aion V, the motor’s output varies. The Luxury version produces 204 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque, while the Exclusive version produces 184 horsepower.

However, despite having different battery capacities (64.5 kWh for the Exclusive and 75.3 kWh for the Luxury), both have the same 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.9-seconds. Based on the NEDC test cycle, GAC Indonesia provides an EV range of 505 km for the Exclusive variant and 602 km for the Luxury variant. The chemistry of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) serves as the foundation for the batteries.

Up to 180 kW of DC charging is possible, and the 30-80% transition takes about 16 minutes. The Aion V will have vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities of up to 3.3 kW to power external electrical equipment—such as coffee makers or hair dryers. The 18-inch sport alloy wheels, Angel’s Wings headlamps and Skyline Run-through taillights are standard on the Indonesian-spec Aion V.

The interior features include a panoramic roof, an ADIGO nine-speaker system, and a 427L trunk capacity that can be increased to 978L by folding down the rear seats. Additionally, it contains a refrigerator in the middle console that can maintain food at 50 degrees Celsius or chill and freeze beverages at -15 degrees Celsius.

In terms of safety features, the Aion V has Intelligent Cruise Assist, which lowers speeds automatically during turns, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Jam Assist, which automatically adjusts acceleration and braking at low speeds, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop and go.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

The Aion V is a sharp looker and boasts a competitive powertrain, but what will impress potential buyers is its capability of up to 180 kW of DC charging, and the 30-80% transition in 16 minutes. Also assembling the car locally in Indonesia will help to keep prices down.
