New MG S5 EV Slated To Debut In Malaysia Soon

As so many other carmakers have done in recent years, MG Motor Malaysia has just revealed a teaser for its new S5 EV model on its Facebook page. The fully electric (EV) crossover’s registration of interest (ROI) is currently open now, suggesting that the S5 EV will soon be introduced in Malaysia.

MG S5 EV

Standard Range D, Standard Range X, and Long Range V are the three versions available in Thailand where it made its regional debut not long ago. Prices range from THB719,900 (about RM94k) to THB899,900 (about RM117k), according to Headlight Magazine.

The MG S5 has dimensions of 4,476 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, 1,621 mm in height, and boasts a 2,730 mm wheelbase. In contrast to the locally-made Proton eMAS 7, the MG S5 is shorter, wider, and longer.

The S5 EV’s “Wind Hunter” active intake grille, streamlined LED light signature with a racing flag motif, and the eye-catching full-width “Family Arch” LED taillights are among the design elements revealed on the website. The exterior appearance is finished off with 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.

For the interior, the Malaysian-spec S5 EV will be equipped with leather and fabric combination seats featuring perforated MG patterns, a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster for the driver.

The range of the Thai-spec MG S5 employs 11 kW AC charging while DC charging varies with base models supporting 88 kW and premium models offering faster 140 kW charging, which enables a 10% to 80% recharge in less than 30 minutes.

It’s unclear if the MG S5 headed to Malaysia will have the same battery packs as the Thai model but it seems likely. The Malaysian MG S5 can enable DC charging at 150 kW, according to the ROI site, which suggests a perhaps larger or chemically different battery pack.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

There’s one thing you can say about the S5—it certainly has the chops to keep up with rivals in the aesthetics and performance departments. With the MG S5 the new kid on the block in the Malaysian EV market, it will knock horns with rivals like the Proton eMAS 7 and the BYD Atto 3, both priced in the RM110k to RM124k range.
