With a price tag of RM332,990, the hotly anticipated Volkswagen Golf R (CKD) has finally made its debut in Malaysia. Bookings for the new Golf R, which is around RM20,000 less expensive than its completely imported (CBU) variant, have been open for booking. since August 2023.
Compared to the CBU version, the CKD Golf R has various mods, including the R Performance Pack, which is now standard, the Akrapovic exhaust system, a complex roof spoiler, new lightweight 19-inch “Estoril” wheels, and the “Drift” and “Special” driving modes. It also gets a new rear spoiler, an “R” front bumper, an “R” radiator grille, and 3 colour choices with Lapiz Blue, Deep Black, and Pure White.
The evo4 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged inline-four engine, which still produces 320hp and 400 Nm is still the engine of choice. The new Volkswagen Golf R can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds when equipped with the brand’s 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) system and a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
Inside, the new locally-assembled Golf R now gains a new head-up display so that the driver can keep their focus on the road. All else, it remains largely similar to its CBU counterpart. Standard interior equipment in the CKD Volkswagen Golf R includes a carbon grey decorative trim, Nappa sport leather seats with R styling, R Performance Steering Wheel with blue backlit “R” button and shift paddles, Head-up Display (New), 10-inch head unit, 10-speaker 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and wireless smartphone charging.
With the exception of the model-exclusive exterior body kit, which includes an aggressive front bumper, a noticeable diffuser around the back, signature satin-silver wing mirror covers, and blue R-styled brake calipers, the locally assembled Golf R is identical to its CBU counterpart.

Power may not have changed much at all, but the car certainly looks the business and offers serious bang for buck. The new locally assembled Volkswagen Golf R will be on display at Malaysia Autoshow happening from May 22nd to 26th at MAEPS, Serdang.
