Perodua’s First EV Slated For 2025 And Priced Under RM100k

Prepare to switch to electricity and keeping to a budget! During today’s tabling of the 2025 national budget (Belanjawan 2025) at the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim disclosed that Perodua’s first EV would land in showrooms than RM100,000.

Although details are scarce, it is widely expected that the Perodua EMO-I concept car, which was shown at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 earlier this year, will serve as the basis for the next EV. This concept is basically a fully electric Perodua Myvi giving us clues to the looks of this new EV.

A single electric motor producing 163 horsepower (120 kW) and 315 Nm powers the EMO-I concept’s front wheels. This makes it possible for the it to jump from 0 to 100 km/h in seven seconds.

A 57.6 kWh battery pack will provide the Perodua EV with a 400 km range. And according to our sources, it should take five hours and fifteen minutes to fully charge at 11 kW while taking an hour and ten minutes to fully charge at a maximum DC charging rate of 50 kW.

The Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Bin Tengku Abdul Aziz, posted on social media that Perodua is working with an undisclosed “international automotive company” to develop its first electric vehicle (EV) in place of (in addition to?) Daihatsu.

Anwar did not address the precise timeframe during today’s budget tabling, however it has already been said that mass manufacturing of the Perodua EV will start in 2025.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

This EV looks the business and is compact enough to deliver 400km of range while arriving at a reasonable price. As to that new partner, we are guessing that Perodua will team up with a Chinese carmaker. Stay tuned.
