Tesla Model Y Rival XPeng G6 Goes On Sale In U.K. And It’s A Lot Cheaper

There’s a new kid on the block and it’s taking the fight right up to the reigning EV champ. The XPeng G6 is now officially available for purchase in the UK and it’s an ideal competitor for the segment boss—Tesla’s Model Y.

With a starting price of £39,990, the Chinese G6 is some £5,000 cheaper than the Model Y’s base grade starting price of £44,990 in the U.K. That’s if we look at the current model, because as soon as the new facelifted Model Y arrives we can expect some extra price differentiation—most probably up.  XPeng is the newbie, having entered the competitive mid-size electric SUV market, right on par with the highly regarded Ford Explorer, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Renault Scenic.

A 66kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery and a 254-hp rear-mounted electric motor power the G6 Standard Range spec, which boasts a range of up to 270 miles and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds.

G6 Long Range Offers Up To 354 Miles Of Range

For up to 354 miles of range and a 6.2-second 0-100 km/h time, the Long Range, which starts at £44,990, replaces the standard 87.5kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery with a more potent 281 hp e-motor. Additionally, the maximum charging speed is increased from 215kW to 280kW, making it one of the fastest models on sale. This enables a 10–80% top-up in less than 20 minutes.

The amount of equipment is the same regardless of the powerplant. A 360-degree surround-view camera system, a panoramic glass roof, a 15.2-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, charging pads for two smartphones, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an 18-speaker 960W stereo, and a heat pump are some of the highlights.

Although consumers can select from five different paint colours, all XPeng G6 models ride on the same 20-inch alloy wheels. Silver Front, Graphite Grey, and Midnight Black all cost an additional £700, while Arctic White is your only free choice. Fiery Orange, which is far more striking, costs £900.

The X9 premium MPV will join the G6, which is the Chinese manufacturer’s initial offering to British drivers, at the end of the year. With a goal of having 25 outlets by 2026, the first XPeng dealerships in the UK are scheduled to open in March.

International Motors Limited (IML), a Solihull-based company, is in charge of the G6’s UK distribution. In addition, it is also in charge of Ora and Haval, which are both owned by Great Wall Motors (GWM), another massive Chinese corporation.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

XPeng has arrived on the EV scene with a real competitor in the G6—a new sharp-looking EV that boasts similar specs to the Model Y, competitive charging infrastructure, cool lines and a price that undercuts the Tesla significantly. In fact, dare we say that the G6 is a better looker than the Model Y.
