New MG5 Debuts In Malaysia From RM94,000

MG has just added another model to its growing arsenal. After the MG5 was introduced in August in Malaysia, a single spec MG5 is now available here with a starting price of RM93,900 according to MG Motor Malaysia. As a limited-time “introductory offer,” MG is reducing the price to RM86,900 by granting a rebate of RM7,000. After launching its first two models, the MG4 and MG ZS, earlier this year, the MG5 is the brand’s first non-electrified model in Malaysia. It is a totally imported (CBU) product from Thailand.

The MG5

The MG5 is powered by a 1.5-litre unit

A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 114 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque propels the MG, and it’s mated to a CVT that mimics eight gears driving the front wheels. The MG5 comes equipped with standard all-around disc brakes, featuring solid discs at the rear and ventilated ones up front.

The MG5 actually slots into the C-segment making it roughly the same size as a Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Its dimensions are 1,480 mm in height, 1,842 mm in width, and 4,675 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm. The car is being marketed by the firm as a B-segment sedan, with the claim that it is among the “longest and widest” in its class.

The MG5 stands out from other cars on the road thanks to its unusual catfish-like shape, which is accentuated by sharp edges, while the rear end takes on a more subdued tone. Although some people might prefer a more uniform design language from front to rear, the MG5 has a distinct personality thanks to this clash of styles.

Standard exterior equipment of the MG5 includes auto LED headlights with on/off function, electrically foldable and adjustable side mirrors with turn signals, daytime running lights, LED taillights and rear fog lights.

To make all of the functions easily accessible, the infotainment screen and centre console are tilted towards the driver. Meanwhile, the passenger seat side of the dashboard features a prism-patterned piano black trim panel with aluminium accents that provide the impression of a high-end interior.

Standard interior equipment includes faux leather upholstery, 6-way electronically adjustable driver seat, 7-inch LCD digital multi-function display, 10.25-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Automatic power windows, Digital air conditioning system with PM 2.5 air filter, Rear passenger air vents, and Smart Key System with push.

CARLIST THOUGHTS

The MG5 is a petrol-powered sedan with bold, sharp looks, an advanced cockpit and tech, and a price that makes it competitive with the Civic and Corolla. It also gets all the mod cons inside like a generous 10.25-inch touchscreen, and Apple and Android connectivity.
