Proton Sales Rise 10% In January Thanks To Saga

Proton sales rose to a healthy 12,882 vehicles at home and abroad which was the brand’s highest January sales total since 2013. The company’s January sales record surpassed both the record set in December of last year and January 2023, when it sold 11,681 cars, indicating a 10% year-on-year increase.

Proton’s predicted market share for the month is 19.5%, a 3.3% increase over the previous month. According to estimates, Proton’s total industry volume (TIV) for January was 66,134 units, which represents a 15.6% decrease from December’s figures.

The company shipped 6,129 units of its best-selling model, the Saga, making it the second-highest volume saloon in the A-segment.

It also sold 1,442 copies of the Proton S70 saloon in January 2024 alone, making it the best-selling “C-segment saloon.” Additionally, the firm has received over 8,000 reservations of the S70 so far. In addition to Malaysia, 15 S70 models have been shipped to Brunei in advance of the country’s February launch.

With 2,002 X50s sold, Proton maintained its lead as the best-selling SUV in the B-segment. Next in line with 365 units each are the X90 and 372 units are the X70.

The brand’s B-segment saloon, the Persona, had a strong start to the year with 1,846 sales, while the Iriz saw sales of 523 units, a 7% increase from December of the previous year.

“Proton is thrilled to start 2024 strongly, highlighted by the strong delivery numbers for our latest addition, the S70,” stated Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar. “The positive feedback we’ve received about our selection indicates that consumers looking for cutting-edge cars find our models appealing,” he added.

OUR THOUGHTS

Some commentators now predict however that following a record-breaking year in 2023, Malaysian car sales would decline in 2024 as a result of factors including the introduction of a luxury goods tax and an increase in SST. Proton bosses however is focusing on its strong sales start this year and sees its product lineup leading to increased sales thanks to its models being some of the most desirable in the country.
